The Urban League believes that home ownership is the center and circumference of strong families and communities. Eliminating the disparity in home ownership between minorities and the larger community is a national priority. Realizing there is no single solution to the problem, the League initiated a multifaceted approach that provides:
- First-Time Home Buyers Classes: Through a partnership with local banks, this project generated new homeowners through assistance to clients seeking to become homeowners.
- Technical Assistance to Community Housing Organization: Through a Memorandum of Understanding with Housing and Urban Development (HUD), technical assistance and leadership enhancement projects are being developed for providers of housing for low and moderate income families.
- Culture of Home Ownership: Through innovative projects, the concept of “home” is reinforced as the economic anchor and support center for families.
- Housing Counseling: The Urban League provides assistance to special needs housing clients who are living with HIV/AIDS or are at risk of becoming homeless.
Bank of America Affordable Mortgage Program
The Bank of America Affordable Mortgage Program is designed to guide clients to the home purchase process with a team or mortgage professional. The Urban League of Hampton Roads was selected to provide clients with one-on-one counseling and classroom education.
