World AIDS Day Will Be Celebrated Worldwide to Unite in the Fight Against HIV and AIDS.
December 1, 2022 – Norfolk, VA, December 1 is recognized as World AIDS Day, an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV and AIDS. First observed in 1988, World AIDS Day is a day to unite to help end HIV and remember those lost to AIDS-related illnesses.
This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is “Putting Ourselves to the Test: Achieving Equity to End HIV.” It encourages people to unite globally to eliminate the disparities and inequities that create barriers to HIV testing, prevention, and access to HIV care.
Locally, in an effort to increase awareness and support the community impacted by the virus and disease, the AIDS Resource Center, Eastern Virginia Medical School, Urban League of Hampton Roads, LGBT Life Center, and the Minority AIDS Support Services invites the Hampton Roads community to participate in the 14th Annual World AIDS Walk on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2022.
Purpose of Event:
As of December 2021, there are 26,080 people in Virginia living with HIV. Statistically, 57% are People of Color; over 1.1 million individuals are living with HIV/ AIDS and almost 1 in 6 are unaware of their infection. Thousands still do not receive treatment due to a lack of information or the stigma that remains. We work throughout the year to change these numbers. It takes many advocates, individuals, social service agencies, and medical providers to influence this change.
