Supporting Families, Spreading Joy: ULHR at the Community Baby Shower

On April 24, the Urban League of Hampton Roads Health Team joined the Southeastern Virginia Health System’s Community Baby Shower in Newport News — a joyful gathering that brought together families, providers, and partners to celebrate and support new and expecting parents.

We connected with over 40 attendees throughout the day, sharing trusted resources designed to meet families where they are. From access to mobile medical care through the Bon Secours Care-A-Van to wellness retreats, auditions, and parenting-focused events, we offered information that supports health, empowerment, and long-term stability.

To keep the celebration going, we raffled off six gift baskets filled with items for babies and parents alike as a small gesture to help ease the journey for families welcoming new life into the world.

The day also gave us a chance to amplify our work more broadly through a special feature on Streetz Radio 87.7 and 102.1. Talking about our health initiatives on air allowed us to reach even more listeners across Hampton Roads and share how we’re working to close gaps in care and access.

Events like these remind us that building healthier communities starts with presence, partnership, and the willingness to show up for one another, especially during life’s most important milestones.

Help Us Uplift More Families

In our region, Black mothers face disproportionately higher rates of pregnancy-related complications, and many families still lack consistent access to prenatal care, postpartum support, and essential health education. These inequities aren’t just statistics — they represent real barriers that we work every day to break down.

If you’re passionate about maternal health, family wellness, or helping connect more families to the resources they need, we’d love to hear from you.
