Chesapeake Regional Career & Resource Fair: Health, Hope, and Second Chances

On Tuesday, June 17, the Urban League of Hampton Roads (ULHR) Health Team participated in the Chesapeake Reentry Council Job and Resource Fair at the Dr. Clarence V. Cuffee Community Center. This impactful community event connected Chesapeake residents, including returning citizens, with local employers, health services, and support organizations.

The fair featured health screenings, a pop-up food pantry sponsored by Where Is God Ministries, and a wide range of resources for families and individuals seeking support. The ULHR Health Team was proud to table alongside other vendors, offering information about our HIV/AIDS services, including Ryan White case management, early intervention services, and medication access programs.

Attendees also received materials on ULHR’s Mindful Nutrition program, Urban Wellness initiatives, and upcoming health and wellness workshops focused on mindfulness, meditation, yoga, journaling, and holistic care. Our team engaged directly with community members to share how these programs support physical, mental, and emotional health.

Events like this highlight the importance of community-based outreach in reducing barriers to care and increasing awareness of vital services across Hampton Roads.

Urban League of Hampton Roads is proud to continue its impactful partnership with Norfolk State University’s Nursing Program, now welcoming its 4th cohort of student interns. Since Spring 2024, this internship has given nursing students hands-on experience in public health outreach, allowing them to apply their clinical skills in meaningful, real-world community settings.

The 3rd cohort of interns made a lasting impression by organizing and hosting the Healthy Together Fair on April 26th—a full day dedicated to health screenings, wellness resources, and direct community engagement. Their initiative reflected the mission of the program: empowering students to serve, educate, and advocate for public health at the local level.

This year, the 4th cohort continues to build on that momentum, returning for their second year supporting the Juneteenth Freedom Festival, where they will staff and manage the First Aid Tent. Under the mentorship of site supervisors Dexter Davis and Joshua Holder, interns are learning about HIV/AIDS education, health and wellness awareness, and strategic community outreach from one of the region’s most experienced leaders.

In preparation for this year’s Juneteenth event, the Summer 2025 interns have also been involved in event promotion—visiting community partners like the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, the Blocker Norfolk Family YMCA, and the Jordan-Newby Anchor Branch Library at Broad Creek to raise awareness and distribute event information.

This partnership continues to strengthen both our mission and the future of healthcare in our region. It’s a meaningful way to invest in the next generation of nurses while expanding our reach in the community. It reflects this year’s theme: CommUnity — where U are at the center of UNITY. We’re proud to be building something impactful, together.
