Empowering Educators: A Look Back at the Teacher Re-Supply Drive
Educators often go above and beyond for their students, frequently reaching into their own pockets to provide necessary classroom materials. In fact, a 2023 study found that 94% of teachers nationwide personally cover supply costs, spending an average of $500 to $1,000 per year. With the average Virginia teacher salary at approximately $62,000—below the national average—many local educators struggle to bridge this gap.
On March 1, 2025, the Urban League of Hampton Roads had the privilege of giving back. The Teacher Re-Supply Drive, hosted at Hampton High School by our Education team, welcomed 60 local educators from Newport News to Virginia Beach, ensuring they had access to essential classroom materials—free of charge.
With generous support from Wal-Mart, Old Dominion University’s Biological Sciences Department, Music and Arts Store (Greenbrier Parkway, Chesapeake), Creative Re-Use Center (MacArthur Mall), and Reck League, teachers were able to gather supplies that will directly benefit their students. Alongside the resource distribution, attendees also had the opportunity to engage with Healthier 757 and Malons Project, Inc., gaining valuable insights and community connections.
This event would not have been possible without the generous contributions from our sponsors, the dedication of our volunteers, and the support of our local community. Thank you for making a difference in their classrooms!
