Since its inception, the Urban League of Hampton Roads has been a constant voice for improved health conditions in the African-American community. The League strives to balance advocacy with direct services that seek to remedy conditions and lifestyles that leads to poor health. Through community education strategies that encompass street outreach, door-to-door canvassing and group presentations, the Urban League Frontline Educators disseminate health information. The Health Unit has been in the vanguard in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The outreach program addresses the risk factors associated with the spread of HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) to at risk populations. Outreach is targeted to communities that consist of African American men, women, and children and other minorities. Strategies consist of distributing literature, safer sex kits and hosting safer sex training classes. Other methods used to provide interventions will include group and community educational projects.
