We Outside Showing Our Pride: Health Team’s June Outreach Recap
The Urban League of Hampton Roads Health Team showed up and showed out this Pride Month, loud, proud, and fully engaged with our community. From bustling city parks to neighborhood block parties, we were everywhere sharing resources, building connections, and celebrating identity, health, and unity.
Throughout June, our Health Team participated in six Pride events across Hampton Roads, connecting with over 1,000 community members. You could find us at:
- Portsmouth Pride (June 1, Festival Park)
- Phabulous Phoebus Pride (June 7, Hampton)
- Hampton Roads Pride (June 21, Town Point Park, Norfolk)
- Suffolk Parking Lot Pride (June 27, North Suffolk Library)
- “I Am What I Am” Newport News Pride (June 28)
- Hilton Pride (June 29, Hilton Village, Newport News)
And we didn’t stop there. Our annual Juneteenth festival kept the momentum going with this year’s theme: Celebrating CommUnity: Emphasizing the “You” in Unity that makes the Community. A perfect reminder that inclusive health outreach begins with visibility and partnership.
Sharing Health, Wellness, and Hope
At each event, our team distributed swag bags packed with valuable information and giveaways. We highlighted ongoing and upcoming programs, including:
- Mindful Nutrition workshops;
- Urban Wellness: Family Baby Shower Retreat (July 12), now accepting donations (monetary and supplies) and volunteers;
- Summer College Tour Series hosted by our Education Team; National HIV Testing Day (June 27) with the City of Portsmouth;
- Promotion of the Bon Secours Care-A-Van, which offers free mobile primary care;
- Healthier757 app for improving health literacy where you can earn while you learn;
- Information on the Virginia Mental Health Warm Line; and
- Our participation in Surviving Through Mental Health: Family Matters (July 17, Norfolk)
A major highlight was hosting students from NSU’s 2025 Summer Cohort, who supported our HIV Testing Day as part of their final project. Their energy and dedication made a lasting impact on our team and the community.
Why It Matters
Our presence at these events is about more than showing up. We are building trust, expanding access, and amplifying the message that health equity belongs to everyone. Whether we are sharing HIV prevention tools, mental health resources, or offering a warm smile, we are making sure our LGBTQ+ community knows they are seen, valued, and supported.
